FLUE TYPES

Do Factory-Built Chimneys Need to Be Swept?

Yes. Factory-built flues collect soot and creosote too. Blackburns Chimney sweeps them with brushes and rods made for that liner, which is a different setup from a masonry flue.

How a factory-built sweeping visit is handled:

  • ◆The flue type is identified before the brush is chosen
  • ◆Rods are sized so elbows and connector pipes are not split
  • ◆Soot, creosote, and debris still come out of the flue and firebox
  • ◆The fireplace is tarped and the floor is covered
  • ◆Level I still checks readily accessible areas
  • ◆The report names hazards or repairs the technician saw

A masonry chimney in the same town gets the same sequence with a brush matched to brick and clay or the liner that is actually there. The company does not run one tool across both.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What Homeowners Ask About Chimney Sweeping

Do factory-built flues build creosote that needs sweeping?
They can. Soot and creosote collect in factory-built flues as well as in masonry chimneys. Blackburns Chimney still sweeps them, with brushes and rods chosen for that liner so elbows and connector pipes are not split by the wrong tool. The rest of the visit matches the masonry job in scope. Debris comes off the smoke shelf and out of the firebox. The crew works inside the home and outside. The fireplace is tarped, and a Level I visual check of readily accessible areas is included. Creosote in either flue type still comes in three levels, and removal follows the level that is there.
How are elbows and connector pipes protected during the sweep?
They are protected by tool choice, not by skipping the dirty sections. An oversized or wrong brush can damage elbows and connector pipes. Rods and brushes are picked for a masonry flue or a factory-built flue before brushing starts. That sizing is part of removing creosote without tearing the liner apart. Containment in the room is separate: tarps, cloths, runners, shoe covers, and a vacuum. Those keep soot out of the house. They do not choose the brush. Both steps happen on the same appointment, and the report notes any hazard the examination found.
What is Level I, and how does it relate to fire risk in the flue?
Level I is included with every sweeping. It is a visual check of readily accessible areas to see whether the flue is unobstructed for continued use. Creosote that can lead to a chimney fire is part of what a sweeping-and-Level-I visit is meant to find and remove. Level I does not include the video scan. If the hazard is hidden beyond readily accessible areas, or there has been a chimney fire, the company moves to Level II. The sweeping report still lists hazards or repairs in plain language so you can see what the visual check and the cleaning turned up.
When does a chimney fire call for a video scan instead of only a sweep?
After a chimney fire, Blackburns Chimney uses a Level II inspection. Level II adds a video scan of the flue interior and looks at attics, basements, and crawlspaces, on top of the Level I steps. A routine sweep's visual check does not replace that camera pass. The same Level II booking is used for a home sale or transfer and when the appliance on the chimney changes. A suspected major hazard can go to Level III, which may open concealed areas and only with consent. Tell the office there was a fire when you get in touch. The chimney inspection page lists those levels apart from the sweep.
How can regular sweeping limit how much creosote stays in the liner?
Sweeping is the removal. Each visit takes out the soot, creosote, and debris that have collected, using the method that fits the creosote level and the flue type. The Level I check that rides along is the routine annual look, so buildup is not left for year after year without a look at readily accessible areas. How often you burn changes how fast that material returns, and the technician watches for the buildup that matches your use. Regular removal is how Blackburns Chimney handles creosote in the liner.

"The whole experience was pleasant. I was able to schedule an appointment on a Saturday (unexpected), the receptionist was very friendly and the sweep was very knowledgeable, professional, and courteous. It could be my imagination, but I think he left the room cleaner than what it was when he first arrived."

"On time, polite, knowledgeable, and honest, fair prices. I was expecting to be told that I needed thousands of dollars of work done to my chimney and, to my surprise the sweep/inspector was honest as to the extent of repairs needed. It is nice to have honest people (especially in this economy) that are not trying to sell you on things you don't need."
