Columbus OH Chimney Sweeping

A crackling fire should bring warmth to your Columbus home, not a hazard left in the flue. Burning wood leaves creosote behind, and that buildup can lead to a chimney fire if it stays. At Blackburns Chimney Services, CSIA-certified technicians sweep chimneys throughout Columbus, OH. We remove soot, creosote, and debris, include a Level I look at readily accessible areas, and leave a plain-language report before you light the next fire.

CHIMNEY SWEEPING

What Happens During a Chimney Sweeping?

Chimney sweeping removes soot, creosote buildup, and debris from inside the chimney so smoke and odors are less likely to back up into the home.

What the visit includes:

  • ◆Brushes and rods matched to a masonry or factory-built flue
  • ◆Drop cloths, rug runners, shoe covers, and high-speed vacuums
  • ◆The fireplace tarped so soot and creosote stay contained
  • ◆Debris removed from the smoke shelf and firebox, not only the flue
  • ◆Cleaning from inside the home and from outside
  • ◆A Level I visual check of readily accessible areas, included with the sweeping

CSIA-certified technicians leave a report on hazards or repairs. Blackburns Chimney commits to leaving the home as they found it. Related detail is on the chimney inspection page and the annual cleaning page.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What Homeowners Ask About Chimney Sweeping

What happens, in order, during a chimney sweeping?
The visit starts by matching brushes and rods to the flue, because a masonry chimney and a factory-built chimney are not cleaned with the same tool. An improperly sized brush can damage elbows and connector pipes, so that choice comes before any brushing. Inside the home, drop cloths and rug runners go down, the technician wears shoe covers, a high-speed vacuum is ready, and the fireplace is tarped so soot and creosote stay in the work area. The crew then cleans from inside the home and from outside, and they remove debris from the flue, the smoke shelf, and the firebox. Every sweeping includes a Level I visual check of readily accessible areas, and the technician finishes with a plain-language report on hazards or repairs. Blackburns Chimney commits to leaving the home as they found it.
What is creosote, and why are there three levels?
Creosote is buildup left inside the chimney. It contributes to smoke and odors in the home, and it can lead to a chimney fire, which is why sweeping treats it as material to remove rather than a stain to ignore. It comes in three levels, and Blackburns Chimney approaches removal differently for each level. A single brushing method is not the plan for every flue. Soot and loose debris come out in the same visit, including what sits on the smoke shelf and in the firebox. The technician identifies what is actually in the flue and removes it on that basis.
Can creosote cause a chimney fire?
Yes. Creosote buildup can lead to a chimney fire. That is the reason sweeping exists as a removal service, not as a cosmetic cleaning of the firebox only. Smoke backing into the room and a lingering smoky odor are related signs that buildup or a blockage is already affecting the flue. Sweeping takes soot, creosote, and debris out. It does not mean the chimney is certified clear of every future hazard. If the technician finds a hazard or a repair, it goes in the report so you can see it in plain language.
How do I keep creosote from just sitting in the flue?
The step Blackburns Chimney uses is removal. Sweeping takes the creosote, soot, and debris out, and the way it comes out depends on which of the three levels is in the flue. The Level I check included with every sweep is the routine annual look at readily accessible areas, including whether the flue is unobstructed for continued use. How often you burn changes the wear and buildup a technician watches for, so mention that when you get in touch. Leaving the buildup in place through more fires does not clear it.
What is different about the visit after a chimney fire?
A standard sweeping includes Level I, which is a visual check of readily accessible areas. After a chimney fire, the inspection the company uses is Level II. Level II includes everything in Level I plus a video scan of the flue interior and a look at attics, basements, and crawlspaces. The same Level II scope is what they use for a home sale or transfer and for an appliance change. Level III is reserved for a suspected major hazard and can mean opening concealed areas, only with the homeowner's consent. Ask for that inspection directly. It is not added to a routine sweep unless you request it. More on the levels is on the chimney inspection page.

"The whole experience was pleasant. I was able to schedule an appointment on a Saturday (unexpected), the receptionist was very friendly and the sweep was very knowledgeable, professional, and courteous. It could be my imagination, but I think he left the room cleaner than what it was when he first arrived."

"On time, polite, knowledgeable, and honest, fair prices. I was expecting to be told that I needed thousands of dollars of work done to my chimney and, to my surprise the sweep/inspector was honest as to the extent of repairs needed. It is nice to have honest people (especially in this economy) that are not trying to sell you on things you don't need."
