Dublin OH Chimney Sweeping

Smoke in the room, or an odor that lingers after the fire is out, is a sign the flue needs attention. Blackburns Chimney Services has served Dublin and the Columbus area since 1986. We remove the soot and creosote, look for clogs that restrict draft, and include a Level I check of readily accessible areas with a written report.

CHIMNEY SWEEPING

How Do I Know If My Chimney Needs to Be Cleaned?

A chimney that needs sweeping often announces itself while the fireplace is in use. The cleaning removes soot, creosote, and debris so smoke and odors are less likely to stay in the room.

Reasons homeowners call for a sweep:

  • ◆Smoke backs into the room when a fire is lit
  • ◆A smoky odor hangs around after the fireplace has been used
  • ◆Airflow seems blocked by debris or buildup in the flue
  • ◆Creosote has had time to collect because the fireplace is used regularly
  • ◆The last Level I look at readily accessible areas was not this year's routine check
  • ◆You want the technician's report on hazards or repairs, not a guess from the hearth

Those are reasons to schedule. The visit still uses brushes sized to the flue, works from inside and outside, and includes the Level I check. More on the diagnostic side is on the chimney inspection page.

DUBLIN CHIMNEY SWEEPING

Chimney Sweeping in Dublin, OH

In Dublin, OH, Blackburns Chimney uses the same visit it uses across Columbus and the surrounding suburbs in Franklin, Delaware, and Union counties: contained cleaning, creosote removal, and a written report.

Sweeping in Dublin

Dublin homeowners get contained cleaning, creosote removal, and a written report.

Creosote Comes Out

Creosote has three levels, and each level is removed differently. Sweeping is how that buildup leaves the flue.

The House Stays Covered

Drop cloths, rug runners, shoe covers, a high-speed vacuum, and a tarp on the fireplace are part of the Dublin visit.

CSIA Technicians

Technicians are certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America, and the company belongs to the National Chimney Sweep Guild.

Level I Comes Along

Every sweeping includes a visual check of readily accessible areas to see whether the flue is clear for continued use.

A Report, Not a Shrug

After the cleaning, the technician notes hazards or repairs in plain language.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What Homeowners Ask About Chimney Sweeping

How do technicians keep creosote and soot off the floors?
Before the brush moves, the fireplace is tarped so creosote and soot stay contained. Drop cloths cover the work area, rug runners cover the path through the house, and the technician wears shoe covers. A high-speed vacuum is part of the kit for material the brush loosens. Debris is then removed from the smoke shelf and the firebox, not left on the hearth. Blackburns Chimney describes this as a mess-free process and commits to leaving the home as they found it. Cleanliness is part of the visit, alongside the actual removal of buildup from the flue.
What gets cleaned besides the flue itself?
The flue is the main passage, and it is not the only place soot collects. The visit also clears the smoke shelf and the firebox. Technicians work from inside the home and from outside so debris is not left behind an inside-only pass. Brushes and rods are chosen for a masonry flue or a factory-built flue, whichever is there. When the cleaning is done, a Level I visual check covers readily accessible areas. The written report after that examination lists hazards or repairs in plain language.
Why does smoke in the room point to buildup?
Smoke that comes back into the room, or a smoky odor that lingers after a fire, often means airflow is restricted. Debris or creosote in the flue can cause that restriction. Creosote is buildup left from fires that have already been burned, and it can also lead to a chimney fire if it stays. Sweeping removes soot, creosote, and debris so the flue is not left packed with that material. Spotting clogs or airflow problems can help improve draft and reduce odors. The visit removes that buildup and checks the flue.
Does sweeping remove every level of creosote the same way?
No. Creosote comes in three levels, and removal is approached differently for each one. Blackburns Chimney does not run one brushing method across every flue and call it done. The technician identifies the buildup and matches the removal to that level, and also matches the brush and rods to a masonry or factory-built liner. Soot and loose debris still come out in the same appointment, including the smoke shelf and firebox. If the level of buildup means the flue needs a repair, that finding goes in the report rather than being folded into the sweep as if it were only dirt.
If there has already been a chimney fire, is a standard sweep the right next step?
A standard sweep includes cleaning plus Level I, a visual check of readily accessible areas. After a chimney fire, the company uses a Level II inspection. That level adds a video scan of the flue interior and inspections of attics, basements, and crawlspaces. It is the same scope they use when a home is being sold or when the appliance on the flue is changing. A suspected major hazard can move the job to Level III, which may open concealed areas and only with consent. Book that inspection on purpose. The chimney inspection page spells out how the levels differ from the sweeping visit.

"The whole experience was pleasant. I was able to schedule an appointment on a Saturday (unexpected), the receptionist was very friendly and the sweep was very knowledgeable, professional, and courteous. It could be my imagination, but I think he left the room cleaner than what it was when he first arrived."

"On time, polite, knowledgeable, and honest, fair prices. I was expecting to be told that I needed thousands of dollars of work done to my chimney and, to my surprise the sweep/inspector was honest as to the extent of repairs needed. It is nice to have honest people (especially in this economy) that are not trying to sell you on things you don't need."
